According to andyeducation, Senegal has a well-developed educational system, with primary education being compulsory and free for all children between the ages of 6 and 16. The Senegalese government places a strong emphasis on education, with the goal of providing access to quality education for all citizens. Education in Senegal is divided into three levels: primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary school in Senegal begins at age 6 and is free for all children up to the age of 16. Primary school consists of six years of study, during which students learn basic literacy and numeracy skills as well as lessons in French and one or two other local languages such as Wolof or Mandinka. Students also have the opportunity to take part in extracurricular activities such as sports or music. Secondary school is also free for all students up to the age of 18 and consists of three years of study divided into lower secondary (ages 14-15) and upper secondary (ages 16-18). During this time students focus on their chosen area of study with a particular emphasis on math, science, French language instruction and African studies. Students can choose to specialize in either science or the humanities depending on their interests and career aspirations. Tertiary education in Senegal is offered at both public universities such as Cheikh Anta Diop University or private universities such as Gaston Berger University which offer degree programs across a wide range of disciplines including engineering & technology, business & economics, law & social sciences, health sciences & medical sciences, humanities & arts etc. Admission to these universities is based on a student’s performance in their secondary school examinations with financial aid options available such as scholarships or student loans should they need it. Overall the educational system in Senegal offers excellent opportunities for those seeking further learning from primary school through to university level with free primary schooling available up until age 16 alongside various extracurricular activities which can be beneficial for student development alongside their academic studies. Additionally there are several specialized religious schools offering alternative educational routes should parents wish to pursue this option instead.
