According to andyeducation, the educational system in Saudi Arabia is based on a comprehensive, free and mandatory system of education for all citizens. The educational system is divided into three levels: elementary, secondary and higher education. Elementary education begins at the age of six and lasts for six years. During this time, students learn basic subjects such as mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, Islamic studies and physical education. In addition to core subjects, students may also take electives such as music or art. Secondary education consists of three years of study in preparation for university entrance exams. During this time students focus on their chosen area of study with a particular emphasis on math and science. Students can choose to specialize in either science or the humanities depending on their interests and career aspirations. Higher Education in Saudi Arabia consists of both public universities such as King Saud University or private universities such as Alfaisal University which offer degree programs across a wide range of disciplines including engineering & technology, business & economics, law & social sciences and humanities & arts. Admission to these universities is based on a student’s performance in the secondary school examinations and they may also be eligible for financial aid options such as scholarships or student loans should they need it. In addition to traditional higher learning institutions there are also several specialized religious schools throughout Saudi Arabia offering Islamic studies alongside traditional academic subjects such as mathematics or science with an emphasis on Arabic language instruction and Quranic memorization techniques for those wishing to pursue an international curriculum with a focus on religion or culture alongside their academic studies. Overall the educational system in Saudi Arabia offers excellent opportunities for those seeking further learning from primary school through to university level with free primary schooling available up until age 14 alongside various extracurricular activities which can be beneficial for student development alongside their academic studies. Additionally there are several religious schools offering alternative educational routes should parents wish to pursue this option instead. See educationvv for Saudi Arabia educational systems.
