According to andyeducation, the educational system in North Korea is highly centralized and regulated by the government. It is divided into three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary education is compulsory and free for all children between the ages of 6 and 11. Secondary education lasts from age 12 to 15 and follows a national curriculum that focuses on topics such as Kim Il Sung’s Juche ideology, North Korean history, literature, mathematics, science and foreign languages. Tertiary education is offered at universities or colleges for those who want to pursue higher education. The North Korean educational system has several unique features that distinguish it from other countries. For example, the curriculum promotes a strong sense of national identity and loyalty to the government through its focus on the country’s history and revolutionary ideology. Education also serves as a tool for social control; students are taught to obey their elders without question and demonstrate loyalty to the ruling party at all times. Despite its rigid structure, North Korea’s educational system does provide access to quality learning opportunities for those who are able to attend school. The country boasts an impressive literacy rate of 99 percent due in part to its free primary education program which has helped reduce poverty levels in recent years. In addition, there are a number of special programs available for gifted students such as the National Merit Scholarship Program which provides financial assistance for those with particularly high academic achievements or leadership potential. Overall the educational system in North Korea provides access to quality learning opportunities but it is heavily regulated by the government which limits freedom of expression among students and teachers alike. The focus on promoting loyalty towards the ruling party may also be seen as a form of indoctrination that restricts independent thinking among young people who may not be exposed to alternative perspectives or ideas outside of school.
