According to andyeducation, Mauritania is a country in North Africa, located on the Atlantic coast of the Sahara Desert. The educational system in Mauritania is divided into three main stages: primary, secondary and higher education. Primary education in Mauritania is compulsory for all children between the ages of 6 and 14. It consists of six years of basic education, where students are taught subjects such as mathematics, language arts, science, history and geography. After completing primary school, students must pass an exam to be eligible to progress to secondary school. Secondary school in Mauritania consists of three years of study. During this time, students are exposed to more advanced topics such as physics, chemistry and biology as well as foreign languages like French or Spanish. Additionally they may take up electives such as art or music depending on their interests. At the end of their secondary studies students must pass an exam in order to gain admission into a university or other tertiary institution. Higher education in Mauritania consists mainly of university-level institutions that offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in various fields such as medicine, engineering and law among others. These universities are divided into public universities funded by the government and private universities which are funded by tuition fees paid by students or donations from individuals or organizations. Additionally there are a number of vocational training centers which offer courses related to specific careers such as nursing or teaching among others; these courses typically last between one to two years depending on the field chosen by the student. Overall the educational system in Mauritania provides citizens with quality educational opportunities throughout their academic lives allowing them to gain knowledge that will help them succeed in their chosen career paths upon completion of their studies.
