According to andyeducation, education in Ireland is provided through both public and private sector institutions. The Irish government provides free primary and secondary education through the Department of Education and Skills, with primary education beginning at the age of four. Primary school typically lasts for six years, followed by three years of post-primary or secondary school. At the post-primary level, students can choose between a range of academic, vocational or technical courses. At the tertiary level, students can attend universities, Institutes of Technology (IoTs), colleges of further education (CFEs), or private third-level institutions. Ireland has seven universities which offer undergraduate programs in a wide range of disciplines such as engineering, law, business and medicine. Additionally there are 14 IoTs which provide courses related to science and technology such as computer engineering and biotechnology. CFEs are also available for those wishing to pursue vocational training in areas such as retail management or hospitality management. In addition to traditional educational pathways there are a number of other options available for adult learners including distance learning courses offered by universities and IoTs as well as apprenticeship programs in various industries such as construction or IT. There are also non-formal learning centers throughout Ireland that provide courses focused on developing literacy skills and life skills such as job search techniques or money management skills. See educationvv for Ireland educational systems.
