According to andyeducation, Canadian education system is composed of both public and private schools, with the majority of schools being publicly funded and managed by the provinces and territories. Education in Canada is compulsory from the ages of 5-18, depending on the province or territory. All children must attend school until they reach the age of 16 in most provinces and territories. At the elementary level, students typically attend kindergarten for one year before progressing to grade 1 at age 6 or 7. Elementary school usually consists of grades 1-6 or 1-8 depending on the district. At this level, students are taught core subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. They also typically receive instruction in physical education, art, music and other elective courses depending on their school district’s offerings. At the secondary level, students typically attend high school for grades 7-12 or 9-12 depending on their district’s curriculum requirements. At this level, students are taught core subjects such as language arts, mathematics, science and social studies while also having access to elective courses such as music or art as well as specialized programs like business studies or technical training programs. In addition to public schools there are also a number of private schools available throughout Canada that offer a variety of curriculums including religious based education systems as well as Montessori schools which focus on an individualized approach to learning. Private schools may require tuition fees for attendance but may also offer financial aid opportunities for those who qualify. Finally there are post secondary institutions available throughout Canada which offer degree programs ranging from certificate diplomas up to doctorate degrees in various fields such as law, medicine or engineering among many others. Post secondary institutions include universities (publicly funded) and colleges (privately funded) both offering a variety of programs that can be completed either full time or part time depending on student preference and availability of course offerings at each institution. Overall Canada provides access to quality educational opportunities for its citizens regardless of their socio-economic background or geographical location within the country through a combination of publicly funded educational institutions supported by government funding initiatives combined with private sector investment in order to ensure all individuals have access to quality educational outcomes leading them onto successful futures filled with potential opportunities they would otherwise not have had access too before now.
