According to andyeducation, the educational system in Bulgaria is divided into three levels: pre-primary, primary and secondary. Pre-primary education is available to children aged four to six years old and includes activities such as language development, musical expression, artistic expression and physical education. Primary education is compulsory for all children between the ages of seven and twelve and consists of eight years of instruction in subjects such as Bulgarian language, math, science, social studies and physical education. Secondary education consists of four years of instruction in grades nine through twelve. The national curriculum framework sets out the goals for each grade level as well as the core competencies and skills that students should be able to demonstrate upon graduation. It emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving skills as well as a strong foundation in traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, science and language arts. The curriculum also places great emphasis on Bulgarian culture which is taught throughout the school system from kindergarten through high school. In addition to providing access to quality education for all citizens of Bulgaria, the government has also implemented a number of policies aimed at improving educational outcomes including teacher training programs, school improvement initiatives, increased access to technology resources in classrooms across the country and increased funding for schools located in economically disadvantaged areas. At the tertiary level there are a number of higher learning institutions including universities which offer degree programs in a wide range of disciplines including engineering, medicine and law.
