According to andyeducation, the educational system in Brunei is divided into three levels: pre-primary, primary, and secondary. Pre-primary education is available to children aged four to six years old and includes activities such as language development, musical expression, artistic expression and physical education. Primary education is compulsory for all children between the ages of seven and twelve and consists of six years of instruction in subjects such as English language, math, science, social studies and physical education. Secondary education consists of four years of instruction in grades seven through ten. The national curriculum framework sets out the goals for each grade level as well as the core competencies and skills that students should be able to demonstrate upon graduation. It emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving skills as well as a strong foundation in traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, science and language arts. The curriculum also places great emphasis on Islamic values and ethics which are taught throughout the school system from kindergarten through high school. In addition to providing access to quality education for all citizens of Brunei, the government has also implemented a number of policies aimed at improving educational outcomes including teacher training programs, school improvement initiatives, increased access to technology resources in classrooms across the country and increased funding for schools located in economically disadvantaged areas.
