Gardena R40li And R70li-Compare To The Automower 305 And 308 (Model 2017)-Test Report&Review

The Gardena Mower R40Li and R70Li have been designed for small to medium sized garden surfaces. Both models are not only almost identical on the outside. The range of functions is nearly the same-the main difference between the R40Li and the large brother Gardena R70Li is the extended range of applications. The R70Li can be used on lawns of up to 700 square meters due to longer running times and short periods of rest. Also the accessories are correspondingly more extensive (longer limit cable-more hook). The R40Li, on the other hand, is only suitable for lawns up to 400 square meters. Of course, both are equally priced.

But how is the similarity of these two Gardena mowing robot models to the lawn robots of the  Husqvarna Automower series-especially the Automower 305 and Automower 308?
This question is answered quickly and easily: in 2006 the company GARDENA (the European market leader for gardening tools) was bought by Husqvarna. Gardena is therefore a subsidiary of Husqvarna. While Husqvarna has specialized in the sale of lawn robots under the designation Automower to dealers, Gardena is a consumer product which can be acquired primarily in the construction market. The Husqvarna Automower is to be marketed as a complete service package including the installation by local dealers. Nevertheless, one comes as a private end customer also to these products-eg via Amazon (Automower prices and reviews).

The Gardena mowing robots are based on the Husqvarna Automower technology and are primarily more integrated in functionality. If these special functions (more below) but not required, the Gardena mowing robots are a cost-effective but almost equivalent alternative.

In the mower, the  Gardena R40Li and R70Li rely on the tried and tested  Husqvarna Automower technology: On a turntable are 3 small knives, which are pressed outwards by the centrifugal force of the disc during the turning movement. Due to the razor blade sharpness of the blades, the cutting pattern is excellent and much better than with a normal petrol lawn mower or electric mower.The risk of injury is nevertheless comparatively low, since the knives simply fold away with hard objects and also with obstacles (eg branches). When lifting, the turntable is immediately stopped / braked. The knives have to be changed often (1-2 times a month), but the operating costs are nevertheless comparatively favorable, since the small knives are available in large packs for small money (compare prices on Amazon for Automower knives/spare blades).

Due to the regularity of the mowing (daily), the cut material is so small and fine that it drops directly between the lawns and disappears. At the same time the soil is thinned. The cut lawn is thus not collected, but mulched.

Another typical feature of the Automower product line is the navigation concept of the GARDENA mowing robot: the garden must be enclosed by means of a limiting cable.This is surprisingly fast installed, as it is simply attached to the lawn surface with small ground anchors.Astonishingly, the lawn roots will pick up the cable automatically after 2-3 weeks and disappear from the visible surface (general information on the functioning of a lawn robot here).

Like the Automower mowing robots, the Gardena R40Li and R70Li drive all areas according to the random principle. When the lawn robot reaches a boundarycable or obstacle, it randomly turns right or left at different angles according to an internal algorithm.Fascinating: every day is mowed in the tat every place at least once. Using a search cable, the Gardena mowing robot can be guided, for example, through a narrow passage (a corridor) to a second remote garden piece. Also the return to the charging station for charging the mowing drone is facilitated by the search cable. How often the robot starts to mow directly at the loading station, or only to the end of the search cable, then mow there, can be adjusted in the menu of the mowing robot.

The lawn robot should mow daily and every day depending on lawn area about 6-12 hours (alternatively during the day or at night). There is no rain sensor, since these lawn robots can easily drive and mow in the rain.The sharp blades cut wet grass just as well as dry. The only downside: with wet grass, this can stick separately under the cover and collect. This occasionally falls to the ground in small piles of table-top balls. In addition, you should clean the Robo mower every 1-2 weeks and remove lawns so as not to cover them under the cover.

Charging is of course done automatically in the charging station-just like the restart when the lithium-ion battery is fully charged again.

Manko at all automakers (but also almost all other lawn robots): mowing on edges and edges (edge ​​mowing) is only possible where the lawn surface runs flat and the edge can be crossed. On adjoining edge stones or sloping edges/edges always an edge, which has to be re-mown by hand, since the cutting wheel under the robot does not reach to the edge.

Comparison/Differences Gardena R40li/R70li And Husqvarna Automower 305/308

Within a brand, the large one of the small breed is actually only distinguished by the mowing performance and thus also in the size of the application area. The Gardena R40Li as well as the Automower 305 are suitable for small areas up to 400/500sqm due to the charging time of 90 minutes and the driving cycle per charge of 60 minutes. The Gardena R70Li and the Automower 308, however, create up to 800sqm because of the shortened recharge time of 70 minutes. However, the driving cycle per charge remains equal to 60 minutes.

Husqvarna and Gardena differ in their functionality. The Husqvarna models create slightly more gradient (25%) compared to the Gardena models (20%). The otherwise significant additional functionality is the extended use of the search cable. With the Gardena models only a remote part can be approached with the search cable, as the garden model always goes to the end of the search cable (where it meets/is connected to the limiting cable). In the Husqvarna models it is possible to define several times, if and when the lawn robot is to use between start points on the search cable (eg after 15 meters and after 40 meters).

The purchase decision between the large or small model should simply fall on the basis of the size of the lawn (but we recommend a little buffer to the factory data-the small models only up to 320qm-the larger models up to 5500qm-yet Larger lawns, one should avoid the larger Husqvarna models like the Husqvarna Automower 310/320).

The choice between Gardena or Husqvarna should be based on the nature of the area. Simply divided lawns (a single piece of grass or a maximum of two simple surfaces connected by a passage) can easily be managed with the more favorable Gardena models. If the surfaces are more complex, one should go to Husqvarna – possibly even to the larger models. The comparable Husqvarna model is about 400-500 € more expensive.

Conclusion: the Gardena models R40Li and R70Li are a good and cheap alternative
